I have always loved my name.
Aastha stands for hope, faith and belief. No doubt I abide by these values too. Aastha matches with my persona perfectly.
Till recently when I moved away from my mother land and I happened to meet people who seem to chuckle when pronouncing my sweet name. I say sweet because since childhood many have admired my name and said, ‘Aastha, you compliment your name well.’
It came to me almost as a heart attack when not one, not two, almost the entire staff at office shared a laugh.
Probing the matter I discovered Aastha rhymes with ASDA a superstore. Before having met me in person they giggled as they thought my name was Asda. The rumour spread like California fires, have you met that girl called Asda!!
Other people rhymed it with pasta, called me asta-lavista which was quite funny and to some its lewd homophonic connotation ASS-THA was a mere amusement!! Now the latter was not at all acceptable to me.
‘No more’ qouth I, Aastha. The next person who giggles had had it!!
It was just mid noon and I had my prey. The guy walked into the office shook my hand, sat opposite my table, stared at my name batch and while addressing me stopped half way, staggered and thought twice before completing my name.
That was enough for me to start. Do you know the purity imbibed in my name? No, was his answer. “Aastha comes from Sanskrit language. It is a word picked up from the holy Vedas. It has deep roots in Hinduism.”
The person who displayed his 32 dirty pale white teeth few minutes ago was mere dumbstruck, with no words and a gawky look he said, ‘what is Sanskrit?’
I laugh till date…
